Elam Lynds: The Warden Who Built Sing Sing Prison
In 1825 Warden Elam Lynds of upstate Auburn Prison travelled by steamboat to the Village of Sing Sing accompanied by 100 prisoners and 21 prison guards. This workforce built a new state prison in Westchester County on the east bank of the Hudson River over a 4-year period. His methods were cruel and unorthodox. This year marks the 200th anniversary of this world-famous prison in Ossining. Anthony Czarnecki, the retired Chief of Staff at the Westchester County Correction Department who serves on the Board of Trustees of the Sing Sing Prison Museum, reveals the legendary early history of Sing Sing with a vivid PowerPoint presentation. Mr. Czarnecki recently completed the first biography of Warden Elam Lynds, which has just been published in the Spring 2025 issue of WESTCHESTER HISTORIAN MAGAZINE. Copies of the magazine will be available for purchase at the event.
This event is made possible by the Westchester Historical Society, Sing Sing Prison Museum and the Ossining Public Library.
