Calling all Local History Buffs! Don't miss author Dr. Dorothee Greenberg who will present her book, "Flight to Freedom - The Underground Railroad in New York's Westchester & Dutchess Counties & Beyond."
Dorothee Von Huene Greenberg, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita of Pace University. Born in Germany, she fled from the Russians in 1945, grew up in Maine, and came to New York to teach at Pace University. The diverse student body inspired her to learn more about African-American history and reality.
When she learned that the Underground Railroad had a documented station in Pleasantville, she decided to do research and write the book "Flight to Freedom: The Underground Railroad in New York’s Westchester and Dutchess Counties and Beyond." Her research included dedicated, courageous human rights activists on both sides of the Atlantic who ended slavery and inspired the station masters of this particular track which went from New Rochelle to Pleasantville, to Bedford, to Quaker Hill in Pawling and possibly to a recently confirmed station in Albany. From there freedom seekers could have gone on to other homes in New York before crossing the Niagara River to freedom in Canada. Dr. Greenberg's presentation will give details about the individuals on this track but also new facts about the people on both sides of the Atlantic whose dedicated research and human rights activism shed new light on Africa, its people and cultures, which helped end slavery in Britain and the United States.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing from Hudson Valley Books for Humanity following the presentation.
